Rainy Train Window

A sleeper car at night, rain on the glass, a lamp on the wall. Wipe the fog, ask for thunder, and listen to the rain and the rails.

A warm wood sleeper compartment looks through a rain-covered window toward a blue mountain valley at night.

Rain, and now and then a storm

Drops run down the glass. Thunder lifts the far sky once and lets it fade over a few seconds; it never flickers. Sound plays only if you start with it.

What you can do here

Wipe the window
Drag a finger or the mouse across the glass. The condensation creeps back over about half a minute, so you can write in it again, and running drops cut their own clear tracks through it.
Change the weather
Rain goes from a drizzle to a downpour. Turn it all the way up and a storm rolls past now and then, a minute or two apart.
Call the thunder yourself
Press Thunder, or T. The light comes first and the rumble a moment after it, the way it does in a real storm.
Mix the sound
The rain and the train are separate recordings with their own sliders, so you can have only the rain, or only the wheels on the rails.

Use it as your wallpaper

Press F for fullscreen and M to turn the sound off and on; the volume and your sound choice carry over to every wallpaper. The sound keeps playing if you switch to another tab.

On a computer desktop
Some wallpaper apps can show a web page behind your desktop icons. Give one the live link above and the scene runs there on its own: no page around it, no ads and no sound.
On a TV or a spare screen
Open this page and press F, or use Fullscreen. While it’s in fullscreen we ask the browser to keep the screen from going to sleep.
On a phone or tablet
Save image downloads exactly what’s on the screen as a picture. Set it as your wallpaper from your photos; the phone will crop the sides.

A live wallpaper keeps a page running all day. Through the live link the scene draws at most 30 frames a second and stops while the screen is covered, but on a laptop it still costs some battery.

About the sounds

Three recordings: rain on a window, a carriage rolling over the rails, and one distant roll of thunder. The rain and the rails are each 28 seconds long. Instead of jumping back to the start, every pass fades into the next one over a couple of seconds, so you never hear the join.

For falling asleep

Set the rain where you like it, turn the Fog up so the view goes soft, press F and dim the screen. If you want plain noise instead, there is white noise for sleep with a timer.
