Data and reuse
Downloads contain the published totals and percentages for every eligible group. Individual answers are never included. Keep the dates and sample size with any chart you reuse, and link to this report.
Downloads open when this period reaches 30 answers.
How this report works
- Question
- “What are you using the screen for?”, shown below the white screen and other solid-color tools. One choice of six; results appear after answering.
- Editions
- use-1 is the original English poll. use-2 offers the same six uses in 19 site languages. The edition is saved with each answer.
- Repeat answers
- One answer per browser every 30 days (local flag), plus server limits. Answers are not a count of unique people.
- Publication rule
- Overall percentages and each group appear only at 30 answers in the selected period.
- Background
- Device type, operating system and browser are attached automatically when an answer is submitted. Country comes from the network connection.
- Periods
- UTC days; rolling periods include today. Answers older than three years are excluded.
Reading the report fairly
These are self-selected answers from visitors to this site, not a random sample of screen users. Thirty answers is a publication rule, not proof that a group represents a population. Percentages describe answers in the selected period, and rounding can make them add up to slightly more or less than 100%.
A color group means the page someone answered on, not their favorite color. The language is the site language, and country comes from the network connection; it is not nationality and can be affected by VPNs. Small groups stay unpublished, so group totals may be lower than the overall count.
Device type, operating-system family, browser family and browser major version are attached automatically when an answer is submitted. They are estimates from browser headers and a coarse device bucket, not verified hardware. Some browsers reduce or change their identifying information. Background fields that were not saved with earlier answers stay marked as not recorded.
The poll asks about purpose, not whether the tool worked or improved health. Reading and night light share one choice, as do photo, art and tracing; the data cannot separate those activities.
Collection details
The question appears below the white screen and other solid-color tools. Visitors choose one of six answers and see the results. The original English poll is use-1. The new edition, use-2, offers the same six uses in 19 site languages. The survey edition is saved with each answer so the rollout can be separated in analysis.
Each browser can answer once every 30 days using a local flag. This limits repeat answers; it does not establish a count of unique people. Server limits also reduce repeated submissions. Answers older than three years are excluded. Dates and rolling periods use UTC; today is included.
Privacy, updates and reuse
We store the answer, survey edition, color page, site language, connection country, UTC day, device type, operating-system family, browser family, browser major version when available, and the background-classification version. The full User-Agent string is read to form these categories and then discarded. No IP address or visitor identifier is stored with a poll answer. Background is collected only when the visitor submits an answer. The live report may cache counts for five minutes; the saved page carries a dated snapshot for offline reading.
