Bright White Screen: Your Display as a Light Source

Getting Maximum Brightness
A web page cannot exceed your display's brightness setting, so squeeze out every nit first:
- Set system brightness to 100% - F-keys or slider on laptops, Control Center on phones.
- Disable auto-brightness / adaptive brightness, which quietly dials the panel down.
- Turn off Night Shift, Night Light, and blue-light filters - they tint the white and cut output.
- Plug in: many laptops and phones cap brightness on battery power.
- On this page, the mouse wheel adjusts software brightness downward if you need less light - by default you get the maximum.
What a Maxed-Out Screen Is Good For
- Video call lighting: a fullscreen white monitor behind your webcam is a soft, even key light that flatters far more than a bare ceiling bulb. (For a warmer tone, try the Zoom Lighting preset on the white screen page.)
- Emergency room light: a phone or tablet at max white brightness lights a small room surprisingly well.
- Makeup and grooming: even, shadow-free light next to a mirror.
- Photography fill: a second monitor as a budget softbox for product shots.
- Reading light: point a white tablet at the wall for gentle indirect light.
How Bright Is a Screen, Really?
Typical laptop panels reach 250-400 nits, desktop monitors 300-600, and recent phones can exceed 1,000 nits outdoors. That is far below a dedicated lamp in total output, but because the light is a large, even panel rather than a point source, it is excellent as soft light at close range - exactly what faces on video calls need.

Will keeping a bright white screen on damage my display?
No for LCD panels - a white screen is normal operation. On OLED displays, very long static use at maximum brightness accelerates wear, so for hours-long sessions prefer an LCD device or take breaks.
Why does my screen dim by itself while using it as a light?
Auto-brightness, battery saver, or sleep timers dim the panel. This page requests a screen wake lock automatically while fullscreen, which prevents sleep in modern browsers - also disable adaptive brightness for a constant level.
Is a white screen bright enough for video calls?

Does this drain my battery faster?
