Windmill Meadow

An old wooden post mill on an open meadow in late-afternoon light, with tall grass in front. The sails turn slowly; the grass moves with every gust.

A small timber windmill stands over a grass meadow in warm late-afternoon light, with tall seed heads in the foreground.

Slow sails and moving grass

The sails turn slowly and the grass sways in the wind. Even with the wind all the way up, a sail crosses any one spot about once a second at most. Nothing flashes. Sound plays only if you start with it.

What you can do here

Raise the wind
Wind runs from a still evening to a steady breeze. The sails take a while to answer, as heavy wooden sails do, and gather speed over a few seconds.
Send a gust
Drag across the meadow from left to right. A gust follows your hand through the grass and fades out across the field.
Touch the mill
Tap the windmill and its timbers creak as the sails take a small extra push.

Use it as your wallpaper

Press F for fullscreen and M to turn the sound off and on; the volume and your sound choice carry over to every wallpaper. The sound keeps playing if you switch to another tab.

On a computer desktop
Some wallpaper apps can show a web page behind your desktop icons. Give one the live link above and the scene runs there on its own: no page around it, no ads and no sound.
On a TV or a spare screen
Open this page and press F, or use Fullscreen. While it’s in fullscreen we ask the browser to keep the screen from going to sleep.
On a phone or tablet
Save image downloads exactly what’s on the screen as a picture. Set it as your wallpaper from your photos; the phone will crop the sides.

A live wallpaper keeps a page running all day. Through the live link the scene draws at most 30 frames a second and stops while the screen is covered, but on a laptop it still costs some battery.

A post mill

This is a post mill, the oldest kind of European windmill. The whole wooden body sits balanced on one big upright post, held up by a trestle of beams underneath, so the miller can push the entire mill around to face the wind. The four sails are wooden lattices; on a working mill, cloth was spread over them, and the miller reefed it like a ship’s sail when the wind got up. In a good working breeze a mill like this turned a dozen or so times a minute; the sails here keep to the slower pace of a light evening wind.

About the sounds

Two recordings and one quiet layer: grass moving in a light wind, the creak of the mill’s timbers when you touch it, and the open air of the field. The grass gets louder as you raise the wind.
