Cabin Fireplace

A stone hearth in a timber cabin, a low fire on a bed of embers, and snow coming down outside the small window. Stir the embers, build the fire up or let it settle.

A low wood fire glows in a stone hearth inside a timber cabin beside a small blue window with snow outside.

Firelight

Small flames move in the hearth and sparks rise now and then. The light in the room changes only a little, and slowly. Nothing flashes. Sound plays only if you start with it.

What you can do here

Stir the embers
Tap the bed of embers, or press Stir the embers. The fire answers with one crackle and a handful of sparks, then needs a few seconds before it will do it again.
Build it up or let it settle
Fire runs from glowing embers to a lively fire. The flames grow, more sparks lift off, the stone around the hearth warms a little, and the sound of the fire rises with it.
Watch the window
Snow keeps falling past the small window at the top right. Snow sets how much, from a few flakes to a steady fall.

Use it as your wallpaper

Press F for fullscreen and M to turn the sound off and on; the volume and your sound choice carry over to every wallpaper. The sound keeps playing if you switch to another tab.

On a computer desktop
Some wallpaper apps can show a web page behind your desktop icons. Give one the live link above and the scene runs there on its own: no page around it, no ads and no sound.
On a TV or a spare screen
Open this page and press F, or use Fullscreen. While it’s in fullscreen we ask the browser to keep the screen from going to sleep.
On a phone or tablet
Save image downloads exactly what’s on the screen as a picture. Set it as your wallpaper from your photos; the phone will crop the sides.

A live wallpaper keeps a page running all day. Through the live link the scene draws at most 30 frames a second and stops while the screen is covered, but on a laptop it still costs some battery.

Why the light barely moves

A real fire's flames dance quickly, but the light it throws on a room changes much more gently, because the whole fire is lighting the stone at once. Here the flames move freely inside the hearth while the light on the walls and floor drifts by about one percent, slower than once a second. It is the part of a fire you can leave on all evening.

About the sounds

Two recordings and one quiet layer: a low wood fire, a single ember crack for when you stir it, and the air of a quiet room. The crack waits four seconds between plays, so stirring again and again never turns into a barrage.
