Christmas Wreath Porch

A wooden front door with a pine wreath, a red bow and a small brass bell, the porch lamp on, and snow coming down over the river beyond the porch. Touch the ribbon and the bell swings and rings.

A pine wreath with a red bow and a brass bell hangs on a wooden front door beside a lit porch lamp, with snow and a river beyond the porch.

Small, slow movements

The pine and the ribbon move a little in the breeze, the bell swings when you touch it, and snow falls past the porch. The lamp stays on and nothing flashes. Sound plays only if you start with it.

What you can do here

Ring the bell
Touch the bow, a ribbon tail or the bell, or press Ring the bell. The bell swings away from your touch and rings, and the swing dies away over a few seconds. It rings at most once every twelve seconds; touch it again sooner and it only rocks a little, too little for the clapper to strike.
Let the breeze in
Breeze sets how much air reaches the door. The pine’s tips and thin sprays give a little and the ribbon tails drift with it, while the dense ring of the wreath barely moves, as it would on a sheltered door. Touch the wreath and the needles near your finger spring back. The wind in the sound rises and falls with the slider.
Watch the snow
Snow falls outdoors, past the post on the right: blue-white in the dusk, easy to see against the dark woods and the water, hard to see against the snow on the ground. The flakes closest to the porch catch a little of the lamp’s light. Snow sets how much.
Put on some music
Music plays apart from the scene’s own sound, with its own volume, so you can have either, both or neither. It starts on this scene’s pick and repeats it; open the list to choose another, play them all in order, or shuffle the ones you tick. There are fifteen, all instrumental: twelve carols, from Jingle Bells to O Holy Night, and three pieces written for these scenes. Music only starts when you start it.

Use it as your wallpaper

On a computer desktop
Some wallpaper apps can show a web page behind your desktop icons. Give one the live link above and the scene runs there on its own: no page around it, no ads and no sound.
On a TV or a spare screen
Open this page and press F, or use Fullscreen. While it’s in fullscreen we ask the browser to keep the screen from going to sleep.
On a phone or tablet
Save image downloads exactly what’s on the screen as a picture. Set it as your wallpaper from your photos; the phone will crop the sides.

A live wallpaper keeps a page running all day. Through the live link the scene draws at most 30 frames a second and stops while the screen is covered, but on a laptop it still costs some battery.

How a bell this size swings

Judged against the door, a standard 36-inch one, the bell is about 5 inches (12 cm) across and hangs on two links about 5 inches above its middle. Something hung like that swings like a pendulum a little longer than its hanger, so it goes there and back in about three quarters of a second, quicker than you might guess. Each swing loses a little to the hook and the air, so it rocks for a few seconds and stops.

Why the ribbon hardly swings

A ribbon tail is long, light and broad, so the air holds it back. Pushed, it drifts over and comes back in a swing or two, the long tail about once every second and a half, instead of swinging on and on like the bell.

About the sounds

Two recordings and one quiet layer: winter air in the pine on a sheltered porch, the small brass bell, and a soft snowy wind that grows with Breeze. The bell waits twelve seconds between rings.
