Bakery at Dawn

An old stone bakery in the blue hour before sunrise. The oven is lit, a fresh loaf is cooling on linen, and the street outside is still empty. Warm the oven, bring up the dawn.

A small stone bakery oven glows behind a half-open iron door, beside a table with a flour-dusted loaf, a wooden peel and a bowl, and a window onto a street at dawn.

Slow light

Light moves slowly inside the oven, steam rises from the bread and dust drifts in the window light. Nothing flashes, and dawn comes on over several seconds. Sound plays only if you start with it.

What you can do here

Warm the oven
Oven brings the fire up or lets it settle. You never see the flames themselves, only their light moving across the inside of the oven and the faint shimmer of hot air leaving its mouth.
Bring up the dawn
Dawn takes the street from blue hour to sunrise. The sky in the window goes pink, then pale gold; the sun reaches the roofs across the street and works its way down the walls, and daylight fills the room. Near the top of the slider a low beam comes through the window and lays the shadow of its bars across the table. It takes several seconds each way, the way morning arrives.
Try the latch
Tap the iron latch on the oven door. It lifts a little on its pin and drops back with a soft iron click.
Watch the bread
Steam keeps rising from the fresh loaf, and flour dust hangs in the window light, catching it as it drifts.

On a computer desktop
Some wallpaper apps can show a web page behind your desktop icons. Give one the live link above and the scene runs there on its own: no page around it, no ads and no sound.
On a TV or a spare screen
Open this page and press F, or use Fullscreen. While it’s in fullscreen we ask the browser to keep the screen from going to sleep.
On a phone or tablet
Save image downloads exactly what’s on the screen as a picture. Set it as your wallpaper from your photos; the phone will crop the sides.

A live wallpaper keeps a page running all day. Through the live link the scene draws at most 30 frames a second and stops while the screen is covered, but on a laptop it still costs some battery.

How a wood-fired oven bakes

In a traditional masonry oven the fire heats the thick stone or brick, which holds that heat and gives it back for hours. Bakers often let the fire burn down and rake out the embers before the bread goes in, then bake on the heat stored in the floor and the dome. That is why, here, you see the oven’s walls glowing rather than open flames.

About the sounds

Two recordings and one quiet layer: the low sound of the oven, the latch settling when you tap it, and the air of a quiet room, which softens a little as dawn comes.
