Gift Wrapping Table
A present wrapped in kraft paper and tied with red linen ribbon, on a wooden table in low winter sun, with snow on the trees outside. Tap the bow, or wait for a draft off the window to lift the ribbon’s loose end.

Small, slow movements
The bow springs back when you tap it, the end of the ribbon lifts now and then, and light snow falls outside. The daylight stays as it is and nothing flashes. Sound plays only if you start with it.

What you can do here
- Tap the bow
- Tap either loop or the knot, or press Tap the bow. The loops give a little and spring back the way stiff linen does, then settle once or twice more as the paper under the knot gives. With sound on you hear the paper and the ribbon move; that sound waits six seconds before it plays again.
- Watch the end of the ribbon
- Cold air slides down the window glass and spills across the table. Every so often it lifts the loose end of the ribbon a few millimeters and lets it down again, slower than it went up; its shadow on the table shows how high it is. Draft sets how often, from never to every ten seconds or so. Tap just beside it and the air your hand moves lifts it a little.
- Let it snow outside
- Snow sets how much falls past the window, from none to a steady fall. In daylight the flakes show against the dark trunks and disappear against the white, as they do outdoors.
- Put on some music
- Music plays apart from the scene’s own sound, with its own volume, so you can have either, both or neither. It starts on this scene’s pick and repeats it; open the list to choose another, play them all in order, or shuffle the ones you tick. There are fifteen, all instrumental: twelve carols, from Jingle Bells to O Holy Night, and three pieces written for these scenes. Music only starts when you start it.
Use it as your wallpaper
Press F for fullscreen and M to turn the sound off and on; the volume and your sound choice carry over to every wallpaper. The sound keeps playing if you switch to another tab.

- Some wallpaper apps can show a web page behind your desktop icons. Give one the live link above and the scene runs there on its own: no page around it, no ads and no sound.
- On a TV or a spare screen
- Open this page and press F, or use Fullscreen. While it’s in fullscreen we ask the browser to keep the screen from going to sleep.
- On a phone or tablet
- Save image downloads exactly what’s on the screen as a picture. Set it as your wallpaper from your photos; the phone will crop the sides.
A live wallpaper keeps a page running all day. Through the live link the scene draws at most 30 frames a second and stops while the screen is covered, but on a laptop it still costs some battery.
Where the draft comes from
On a cold day a pane of glass is much colder than the room. The air touching it cools, grows heavier, and slides down the glass, then spills off the sill across whatever is in front of it. It’s the chill you feel sitting by a closed window in winter even when the frame is tight, and it is just enough to lift something as light as the end of a ribbon.
About the sounds
Two recordings and one quiet layer: the hush of a table someone has been wrapping at, kraft paper and ribbon moving when you tap the bow, and the air of a quiet room. Draft turns the table up a little.
